Closed and kept monies in 2 savings accounts without notifying me
May 25, 2008
Washington Mutual complaint
I recently found 2 savings account books with $500 total, in my children's name, when the bank was called American Savings who WaMu bought out. Even though it has been 7 years, I never closed these accounts. Neither book has been stamped "closed" which banks use to do.

When I called WaMu about it, they told me they had no record of either account. Funny how they could find my kids names in the system, but not their money. They never sent a warning letter to me of inactivity on the accounts and to do something about it. Instead, they took care of it for me by closing both accounts out, keeping my money and claiming ignorance.

For inactive accounts, the money is escheated to the state. Contact the state agency that handles unclaimed property (In CA, The controller) and you can get the money back, with interest.
